I've found these booklets helpful - ' A five step formula for a fabulous wardrobe on a budget ' from <a href="http://www.insideoutstyleblog.com/">Imogen </a>and 'personal wardrobe planning' from sewing plums.com.<br />
One idea from the five step formula was to think about the words you would like to describe yourself. My words include<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Elegant professional<br />
Approachable calm<br />
Trustworthy creative<br />
feminine and self assured. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I think that the jersey dresses I have been making, worn with heels and statement jewellery do help me convey some of these words. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Another approach is to think about the roles you have in your life, and think about what clothes you need for those roles. So </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. Project and programme manager - meetings, one to one and groups, presenting, desk bound work both writing and computer, creating solutions and plans. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
2. Homemaker - cook, clean, organise, shop, create</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3. Wife/mother/daughter/sister/friend - listen, care, entertain, socialise </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
4. Me time - exercise, socialise, create, read.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So I need to have work outfits for 50 hours a week, and the rest of my time I mainly need comfortable, casual clothes, with only an occasional need for smart party outfits. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So what does this mean for my sewing? That I should focus more on making work clothes, which I have been doing. I am not aiming for a 100% handmade wardrobe, so am happy to buy clothes when there is something I don't want to make, or I don't have time. Currently I make dresses and tops and buy jeans and trousers, and only have a couple of skirts. </div>
<div>
A recent non jersey dress make using Vogue pattern 8886, without the collar, as I didn't have enough fabric. Statement necklace from <a href="http://www.bijouled.co.uk/">Bijouled </a> my favourite shop! I do have matching earrings as well. The fabric is a silk and linen, from Fabworks. It does crease, and isn't as comfortable as jersey So jersey dresses are still best in my book, I've got at least 4 more recent makes to share!<br />

Im spending time desperately making something to wear for my friends wedding in two weeks time, not sure I'm going to be 100% happy with what I make, but I'll write my next blog post about it then I can get back to planning SWAP2017!</div>

Ive just read <a href="https://saturdaynightstitch.com/">Hila's </a> experience of finishing knits this year - and I am in awe of her output! My conclusion is that even though I've done quite complex knitting in the past, I'm aiming for the simple, so its mostly scarves/shawls and hats! I did start a cardigan in some apple green malabrigo this time last year. Decided I didn't like it and started a miette Cardigan. My ravelry projects are here <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/aquascrap">http://www.ravelry.com/projects/aquascrap</a><br />

I'd almost finished it 6 months ago, but have never got round to knitting the button band so it still looks like this! </div>

Despite not really being interested in hand knitted jumpers now I am tempted by <a href="http://fabrickated.com/2016/09/24/the-unbearable-challenge-of-learning-my-first-jersey/">the lorelle jumper</a> which Kate wrote about so eloquently. But I don't understand how you knit with 4 ply on such large needles? so could I use double knit? Ill have to do some investigations!</div>

<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUPy5YGfscHxIJV0AqxDxeKlRWzrkk3_vr133C4ajQnOMv6zUVXiasoHDf8WdNOLQAc8WzIDOijjg6CSSeASbWtA9KpJVg-1SRItE6FBXIyA9rZtq_aiGyQKDa7EKN383ebZFunTURH4W2/s640/blogger-image-317508656.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUPy5YGfscHxIJV0AqxDxeKlRWzrkk3_vr133C4ajQnOMv6zUVXiasoHDf8WdNOLQAc8WzIDOijjg6CSSeASbWtA9KpJVg-1SRItE6FBXIyA9rZtq_aiGyQKDa7EKN383ebZFunTURH4W2/s640/blogger-image-317508656.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I am not lining it or using any buttons, so I'm hoping it will be pretty quick for my keep it simple stupid (kiss) swap. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjldV9HkvVYgOQMwQwu9T_QnjkTpikFPW1TO8Dtu27W6vOBrclZfPzzXRLZpfAWjTNLRQvB7lZdzAF8g1j-7cBYiz1j1fOzgkR43_HP_aED25Sjl0fIG0Q4bMNvgMP28SPlYGkWbHbDqIHZ/s640/blogger-image-2116696684.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjldV9HkvVYgOQMwQwu9T_QnjkTpikFPW1TO8Dtu27W6vOBrclZfPzzXRLZpfAWjTNLRQvB7lZdzAF8g1j-7cBYiz1j1fOzgkR43_HP_aED25Sjl0fIG0Q4bMNvgMP28SPlYGkWbHbDqIHZ/s640/blogger-image-2116696684.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
I've extended the length. Really love this colour.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So mid December and finally finished my second pre Christmas SWAP2017 item. I like the shape and think it will be really versatile. Here's the dress and jacket together. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

The rules state you can make two rogues that don't have to go with bottom halves, but still have to go with uppers. So I have a pre made (before 5th November) dress made from a new look pattern 6013 here. <div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheaYqfSRPxz5uhC8wthwLuIYweDHqK7iHoq7BY8sJT99fjb_qZWJMQ9nPZjVAUnrcNmCW7ApOV0aTxWDFymHnksznSdd9Es61vPvNbOSYvEhJBH82chcLVcvMTqFzTTmS2iMkyIwXgZHeH/s640/blogger-image-73068927.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheaYqfSRPxz5uhC8wthwLuIYweDHqK7iHoq7BY8sJT99fjb_qZWJMQ9nPZjVAUnrcNmCW7ApOV0aTxWDFymHnksznSdd9Es61vPvNbOSYvEhJBH82chcLVcvMTqFzTTmS2iMkyIwXgZHeH/s640/blogger-image-73068927.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgbuexftk7-ZrHE57NAm8fp1WEd9Nj-HknhbgM2haqaBlZiL9YmiRS-qsHgVbIv0WjDUljvylHY_6Cnwxuu5ayfcA9ybDtsPVq_rRkST2T_-pxFMpg2OR5OjVlEL7UKlp-eiRYrzwAx5We/s640/blogger-image-503202643.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgbuexftk7-ZrHE57NAm8fp1WEd9Nj-HknhbgM2haqaBlZiL9YmiRS-qsHgVbIv0WjDUljvylHY_6Cnwxuu5ayfcA9ybDtsPVq_rRkST2T_-pxFMpg2OR5OjVlEL7UKlp-eiRYrzwAx5We/s640/blogger-image-503202643.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I made this one from teal ponte, with no zip so it was really quick and easy. I love wearing it, and am wearing a boden grey or pale pink cardigan with it, now the weather is colder. But I 've got enough fabric for a jacket......</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">You are allowed to sew two items before the official start date of the 26th December 2016. So, last Sunday I cut out another dress, and extended the sleeves using a pattern I'd got free with a magazine simplicity 8055, which also has two piece sleeves. The fabric is navy and white ponte from Minerva crafts. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgejbc7P5u4Qn0RDgXG8FUAITb2q30nwJddpZF6EWtoQVntkwQPiZnqRKcjySVDgoQ_ys-1zTxz2p5kA3ujmdEVtlteWZK83xz_5fwiT4I-7B5bDRhGqsMS9AqsiHIDpCHvswHGmAeuwuha/s640/blogger-image-1496704484.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgejbc7P5u4Qn0RDgXG8FUAITb2q30nwJddpZF6EWtoQVntkwQPiZnqRKcjySVDgoQ_ys-1zTxz2p5kA3ujmdEVtlteWZK83xz_5fwiT4I-7B5bDRhGqsMS9AqsiHIDpCHvswHGmAeuwuha/s640/blogger-image-1496704484.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlAXNcNAEt2Eq8nG-z6M3uKz6GpHXo3XjaGiOhLq6kEO0sp4BOFeX6iiaxlFJNqyGIr1yooYi9NG2UWHdLxc4nLxWEwGR-6iD7b8-LwpeQPHwhoa7q4l2rHE64RS4NZYfxFMvEgGamh5Gy/s640/blogger-image-43792389.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlAXNcNAEt2Eq8nG-z6M3uKz6GpHXo3XjaGiOhLq6kEO0sp4BOFeX6iiaxlFJNqyGIr1yooYi9NG2UWHdLxc4nLxWEwGR-6iD7b8-LwpeQPHwhoa7q4l2rHE64RS4NZYfxFMvEgGamh5Gy/s640/blogger-image-43792389.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZvve38NeXAID_2W24uUT4Z9sIGsvUCjc7CWW8Bi79SpdUoPx1aoiWp7nCUVKLjOqep9U5MT8iX-m46OGALG8E8mdeYxNu_tfN3RXxbJhrn7YZBWFVsnnPja9Wnavq0T2BW3feivc5mSgw/s640/blogger-image-1415450864.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZvve38NeXAID_2W24uUT4Z9sIGsvUCjc7CWW8Bi79SpdUoPx1aoiWp7nCUVKLjOqep9U5MT8iX-m46OGALG8E8mdeYxNu_tfN3RXxbJhrn7YZBWFVsnnPja9Wnavq0T2BW3feivc5mSgw/s640/blogger-image-1415450864.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">So two down, nine to go! But I definitely didn't want to miss making a planner, as it combines two of my interests, mixed media art and planning! I knew roughly what to expect as Kate has been on craft channel Hochanda, demonstrating with a planner. After gesso ing all the boards, we chose three colours and applied them in patches as an initial base. I was surprisingly subtle with my choices.<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo9hcczUIfJU9fkQKj3JfX02iechCaOeuGKb97v8uFmxzhDCElJtmbjcErwJdIEaHoEY8WAjPUYVl3umuF2R_Otg5QQo1_ryEls8fhzsoBwRKGLxwY-vcVfEpWsTfDRq6qcsSISlQJQKg6/s640/blogger-image-938265913.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo9hcczUIfJU9fkQKj3JfX02iechCaOeuGKb97v8uFmxzhDCElJtmbjcErwJdIEaHoEY8WAjPUYVl3umuF2R_Otg5QQo1_ryEls8fhzsoBwRKGLxwY-vcVfEpWsTfDRq6qcsSISlQJQKg6/s640/blogger-image-938265913.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih28t6sFOFU8gNNQpojioxuzMuHuuJVr422BJ8_fmR2XwjdPjcUCncu5VoogykR5pglCnHZa4UocvloiOpzBpGBiV5npqMrRJUhHodiRh5iNwJxB8faqetKnMoicWmKlspWShS4cuWWRUQ/s640/blogger-image--591028193.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih28t6sFOFU8gNNQpojioxuzMuHuuJVr422BJ8_fmR2XwjdPjcUCncu5VoogykR5pglCnHZa4UocvloiOpzBpGBiV5npqMrRJUhHodiRh5iNwJxB8faqetKnMoicWmKlspWShS4cuWWRUQ/s640/blogger-image--591028193.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQxEQflQ95oE5rzTU8KIVh_YXsakoTsN5OMpRVIkRt5YHzbgdsp-IMsqd5kaqgynWqNg8IGedi3pHL5Ab7vIVw1eOTr68xzsWBYcxDwF9b80y1Cc5IypRu-wK2RZaU55c_vd5Actab9A2m/s640/blogger-image--1330170454.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQxEQflQ95oE5rzTU8KIVh_YXsakoTsN5OMpRVIkRt5YHzbgdsp-IMsqd5kaqgynWqNg8IGedi3pHL5Ab7vIVw1eOTr68xzsWBYcxDwF9b80y1Cc5IypRu-wK2RZaU55c_vd5Actab9A2m/s640/blogger-image--1330170454.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlRnxB7s-IG3cU4-MGNSG2ug6Z1-dTA-QbsZ8viNQZBbjD5jtmD_t4ekYXHtAz2ZabNDjUHpC5b1edyxwLnstSCdQWm5QOycY6ex7CH8j-idyDCZGEREeBcou3Tk3WJMZPfksSn2Dj48Vq/s640/blogger-image--1049412881.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlRnxB7s-IG3cU4-MGNSG2ug6Z1-dTA-QbsZ8viNQZBbjD5jtmD_t4ekYXHtAz2ZabNDjUHpC5b1edyxwLnstSCdQWm5QOycY6ex7CH8j-idyDCZGEREeBcou3Tk3WJMZPfksSn2Dj48Vq/s640/blogger-image--1049412881.jpg"></a></div><br></div>Lots of stencilling, stamping and layers later..... But...... I learnt a lot. The planning was fun, and reading other people's plans and changes was good. I made so many wadders! But that's because I should have used TNT patterns, or very simple ones! <div>And I made one bottom and three tops I was very happy with. <br><div><br></div><div>The rules for 2017 came out on the 5th of November, and are focused on planning your wardrobe to coordinate, and sewing. </div><div><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br>2017 Less is More SWAP Rules<br><br>Eleven garments divided between Upper, Lower and Over pieces. These are tops and dresses; bottoms; and layers. There are minimums and maximums in each category, to provide balance and variety. You decide the final distribution.<br><br>Upper: Minimum 3, maximum 5.<br>Lower: Minimum 3, maximum 5.<br>Over: Minimum 2, maximum 5. No more than ½ may be outerwear.<br><br>You decide how many of each, within the numbers above, to total 11 garments.<br><br>Your twist: Each garment in a category must work with at least half of the garments in each of the other two categories. Example 5 Upper, 3 Lower, and 3 Over. Each upper would need to work with 2 Lower and 2 Over garments.<br><br>ROGUE garments. Two dresses may be “rogue” in that they won’t need to work with Lower garments. They still need to work with Over pieces per the rules above. <div>
I started knitting again this year, I've been pleased with most of it, even though I frogged some, and ditched some. I probably need to just focus on hats and scarves/shawls, I don't like the current way of knitting everything together on circular needles, and I think that the final look of a jumper or cardigan is not that predictable. If I have free time, generally I'd rather be sewing.<br>
<br>
I started with this pattern <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/candle-house">Candlehouse</a> by Alison Moreton, in February, it's inspired by a building close to Leeds railway way station. I went on a PRINCE2 course in Leeds this year, and went past this building every day for a week!<br>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
I went to lovely book launch a week ago. It was to launch "How to Hygge" by Signe Johansen</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAkiv0IA1a65T-w0YqPesZ8lntXF45wms_feokqemSjPH10r3bcGCYhNh-hd_mQmmILyX0YyKy6G8z41aloNNnRnQYIfHyXd7khyQDx1pnF7lTGqYkDFb6EwRv3Z7YA2CEguttV4qxSvy4/s640/blogger-image--534750941.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAkiv0IA1a65T-w0YqPesZ8lntXF45wms_feokqemSjPH10r3bcGCYhNh-hd_mQmmILyX0YyKy6G8z41aloNNnRnQYIfHyXd7khyQDx1pnF7lTGqYkDFb6EwRv3Z7YA2CEguttV4qxSvy4/s640/blogger-image--534750941.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVVe86N5Z3fMMUA4oME66f3e-7CKGJaVAR1xg74S__FRBnQ4xNfqgfEVuALzHh2aO7iLTqCQMdKt2OYwAnozgOtSgsZai6wNHgCViA7Rio9gfB7asubr7je3EB3f0QTZlKiMwfEwbzvpRP/s640/blogger-image--846098951.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVVe86N5Z3fMMUA4oME66f3e-7CKGJaVAR1xg74S__FRBnQ4xNfqgfEVuALzHh2aO7iLTqCQMdKt2OYwAnozgOtSgsZai6wNHgCViA7Rio9gfB7asubr7je3EB3f0QTZlKiMwfEwbzvpRP/s640/blogger-image--846098951.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I know it's the latest thing, following in the footsteps of feng shui, Marie Kondo etc, books to help us feel better about our selves and our surroundings, but I did have a lovely evening! It was helped by <a href="http://www.baltzersens.co.uk/">Baltzersens</a> who hosted the event with free coffee and as much cake as you could eat! Then I went to a new wine cafe and shared a bottle and a chat with a good friend - very hyggelichy!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The concept is widely described on the Internet, but for me it is about finding joy in those things you can do on a daily and weekly basis, having coffee and cake, get outdoors, meet up with friends, share meals and light candles. I think I do all these things anyway, but it's good to be reminded and refocus. Candles and gin are a good place to start! </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFR0WBh-Bsze4LYI-6cmroDQViEVBebnKUAzR4SmHV-5hG0hnueoAr4qKrhofICXaRcGSpRxf1cWDM8yw7_He42Jv_2aB9z_tBLYJWWbt7kMNq8kNhmoC0Sao_j6rTx0RplQyTNniIjhCz/s640/blogger-image--1855436974.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="388" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFR0WBh-Bsze4LYI-6cmroDQViEVBebnKUAzR4SmHV-5hG0hnueoAr4qKrhofICXaRcGSpRxf1cWDM8yw7_He42Jv_2aB9z_tBLYJWWbt7kMNq8kNhmoC0Sao_j6rTx0RplQyTNniIjhCz/s400/blogger-image--1855436974.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One of the concepts I picked up from her book was about doing things to a level that you enjoy. For example I cycle and swim, but I won't be aiming for a triathalon anytime soon! I got to thinking about my sewing, which is a form of self sufficiency, I would never buy the number of clothes that I make, and I love feeling that what I make is unique. </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_3vPzKt6MoHd3Wyk7tWRbuWurKAebj0mruSKFC21c3cqxj8hypSNXDZgRAlbEmwr3gV3GYKHqfMSVaOrFzBYJJi-dpd1sI2udB_m8zjlic_Ox6HsA6PBiA_xTXVAtVCkQ2qzCw9caGC-z/s640/blogger-image-594692576.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_3vPzKt6MoHd3Wyk7tWRbuWurKAebj0mruSKFC21c3cqxj8hypSNXDZgRAlbEmwr3gV3GYKHqfMSVaOrFzBYJJi-dpd1sI2udB_m8zjlic_Ox6HsA6PBiA_xTXVAtVCkQ2qzCw9caGC-z/s640/blogger-image-594692576.jpg" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I am mainly sewing jersey dresses at the moment. I could push myself more in terms of techniques and difficulty, but this is what I am enjoying now. I also get loads of pleasure from wearing my hand made dresses. I will get to a point where I want to sew something different, but this is ok for now. I'm working on this pattern and fabric. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAoQQbWfZ1vAUDDe7LJrjvmD3JDHVVBVEv-47a_tKOAXsGbX25-u90N-k2RCseYQwF-7ZidDx0-s-_X5meW38iyAa3l5ujN5Ivs6nA07f4Nf2zi6-MMFj1wK8f3gzDMJUQ8_59e9KT8gXS/s640/blogger-image--1157387948.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAoQQbWfZ1vAUDDe7LJrjvmD3JDHVVBVEv-47a_tKOAXsGbX25-u90N-k2RCseYQwF-7ZidDx0-s-_X5meW38iyAa3l5ujN5Ivs6nA07f4Nf2zi6-MMFj1wK8f3gzDMJUQ8_59e9KT8gXS/s640/blogger-image--1157387948.jpg" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Just to point out the fabric, I saw it on <a href="http://www.tresbienensemble.com/home/black-and-blue">this blog</a> she is Canadien and the fabric came from <a href="http://www.chienvert.com/">chienvert.com </a>a Belgian website. There was still some left, so obviously I bought some. So for me it feels like a shared experience across the world, something really pleasing about that now, given recent events. </div>

Of course there has been some retail therapy and fabric buying! This last week has been my first chance with a week off, spent at home. Although I didn't finish SWAP 2016, it made me realise I need to focus on sewing for work, I've got enough statement dresses and casual stuff. To maximise productivity, I focused on a couple of quick jersey dress patterns.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The first one is a free pattern from <a href="http://so-sew-easy.com/wrap-dress-pattern/">so sew easy</a> Watch the video on turning the dress into a maxi to get some help in doing the pleats. Like most sewing bloggers I've got at least 3 wrap dress patterns. But a fake wrap is the best, you get the effect without having to worry about the skirt gaping open. I'd been tempted by some polka dot viscose jersey from <a href="http://www.fabworks.co.uk/">Fabworks</a>. I'm really pleased with it. It's comfortable but still smart. </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizIu60l2EXZdQEH0aTBk6-1Qt3fRx1RUaYZnZlL-kpcOkET84U77ROFF2kH3sUnDIx_21J0usM6tIldlFBSsTQhEsiXMeg78WLZOuc9mjm7Ewm7zkEr1FOZV5YA9T2-FTZatCQBp51FsfU/s640/blogger-image-438616173.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizIu60l2EXZdQEH0aTBk6-1Qt3fRx1RUaYZnZlL-kpcOkET84U77ROFF2kH3sUnDIx_21J0usM6tIldlFBSsTQhEsiXMeg78WLZOuc9mjm7Ewm7zkEr1FOZV5YA9T2-FTZatCQBp51FsfU/s640/blogger-image-438616173.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM7KeZxQVmygNCdHvR-0XY0YJXfd9KRwoch2f3oWx80orjJLFAmfA-bcJnitm80sdL0XPW1xhJCxMaz__zceENko_0EUxYCVlidx3EI1fUrQygIa_5mRwNaNkb6L5J1_LYNFebgchQKB1F/s640/blogger-image--1898909221.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM7KeZxQVmygNCdHvR-0XY0YJXfd9KRwoch2f3oWx80orjJLFAmfA-bcJnitm80sdL0XPW1xhJCxMaz__zceENko_0EUxYCVlidx3EI1fUrQygIa_5mRwNaNkb6L5J1_LYNFebgchQKB1F/s640/blogger-image--1898909221.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I also bought some viscose jersey online and though initially not sure about the pattern, really like this dress too. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYOheZu-_vTF_zEJnav_mpw3mBLUDqJtTexOQtyzuX3Q_3rR7hLTgQKnfZqqa9FZ9mmnYZvtpr4yMm0UKTwUiiCZcs41mtqs2tywSf-1w81cEtFP69pzG_x8IVb4qqpOXub1x54Rh90ZDK/s640/blogger-image--529533702.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYOheZu-_vTF_zEJnav_mpw3mBLUDqJtTexOQtyzuX3Q_3rR7hLTgQKnfZqqa9FZ9mmnYZvtpr4yMm0UKTwUiiCZcs41mtqs2tywSf-1w81cEtFP69pzG_x8IVb4qqpOXub1x54Rh90ZDK/s640/blogger-image--529533702.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I have had one disaster, which is not the fabric or the pattern, but when I made this fabric up, I felt like the dress was wearing me, and I also had a black circle which looked like a target on one side of my err chest, which would make me self conscious if I had to stand in front of an audience at work! I'm being ruthless with clothes, if I don't love it, out it goes!</div>

I've also made 3 itch to stitch <a href="http://itch-to-stitch.com/product/kathryn-top-dress-digital-sewing-pattern-pdf/">Kathryn</a> dresses! An easy pattern, with more pleats. I will probably only wear the navy and pink one to work. I love the other two, but a bit bright for work. The scuba one is amazing, so bright it nearly glows! I'll be wearing this to a few parties and events this year! Fabulous fabric from Fabworks again.</div>

It's a drapey cotton voile. I did think about another Lottie blouse, but I've already made a navy one. So to ease me gently into making jackets, I made a kimono jacket<br />

This will take over from the Colette sorbetto as my go to summer vest pattern. I really like the neckline at the front and back, and the way it fits across my shoulders. Yes I will post a picture, when I post my #SWAP2016 outfits! The satin bias binding came from the trimmings stall at Dewsbury market, and was 20p a metre.</div>

Buying tools and raw materials such as fabric makes you feel that you will suddenly become good at your chosen hobby, a short cut to becoming an expert, especially if you have seen that fabric or pattern used by someone else. It's so easy to shop online, rather than start making something with what you already have. <br>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
It's a balance though, I've realised that making mistakes in what you buy, is part of most creative hobbies. These are fabrics I have that I don't like now, but I don't want to give away yet, cause I might change my mind! Interestingly, since thinking about this, I have organised my patterns into groups, and I've realised some of these fabrics might make wonderful linings! </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Xew9MmkCc7kNNCs3TwUuWbP3vwVD6gefAihHIDeufwGXUuqEIAYJBV5gqk88fa0QSVYBUxAEZhYArZO4Nqsmx8-d1HQEl6yQUDMP5wrZfpfkWj6eF0cqFaEIsRZN3hOKjMVc_IXkm0US/s640/blogger-image-819786591.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Xew9MmkCc7kNNCs3TwUuWbP3vwVD6gefAihHIDeufwGXUuqEIAYJBV5gqk88fa0QSVYBUxAEZhYArZO4Nqsmx8-d1HQEl6yQUDMP5wrZfpfkWj6eF0cqFaEIsRZN3hOKjMVc_IXkm0US/s640/blogger-image-819786591.jpg"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
You also end up with scraps that might come in useful one day, so I have those as well. I also have other fabric designated for muslining! These scraps include bits from my union jack dress for a jubilee street party, and my Tour de France dress. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTnzNs-6qJR250gf7GekgfIUGCxd_ejxdZ-VtzAsulqSH9ZHf1U7YDvj99ANlcMwuZML08eLF78EzqMIM1bcaf34FIta5Nqyu3NAOZ9qvQQtkAVdWz9R9qiUvDPc1UDyZBH4C-uTVtWbPb/s640/blogger-image--773951309.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTnzNs-6qJR250gf7GekgfIUGCxd_ejxdZ-VtzAsulqSH9ZHf1U7YDvj99ANlcMwuZML08eLF78EzqMIM1bcaf34FIta5Nqyu3NAOZ9qvQQtkAVdWz9R9qiUvDPc1UDyZBH4C-uTVtWbPb/s640/blogger-image--773951309.jpg"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
My aims are to use my stash, but be considered about it. Sometimes I have rushed into projects, just to use fabric up, and I end up wasting it. I do understand the concept of not saving fabric for best, and sometimes you just have to go for it. Last summer I made 6 Grainline scout tops, which all fitted slightly differently dependent on the fabric used. I wear them a lot, at home and at work. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I do like the fact that fabric can be made into something you love to wear. But your tastes change even in a short period of time. I still like most of my stash, but I don't look at floral fabric that often anymore. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Another aim is to forget FOMO! I am managing to do that with my knitting. I am really tempted to buy two cardigan's worth of Malabrigo worsted, because I could get a 25% saving! But I have two cardigans and scarves to knit anyway. I want to save the pleasure of purchasing for when I have nothing to knit. I also realise I might not want to knit by then! So my stash consists of two lots of wool, Malabrigo in apple green and two balls of lavender kid silk and mohair. I have started some projects that I have given up on. My guidelines for wool stash are going to be strict, just one lot of wool for a cardigan, and two lots for scarves/hats/gloves. Contemplating going to yarndale in September, so I might not stick to that rule!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrrWuaSsMlNpKdJ0DZcEHnW7Pno1jGjsSUNzgFWG2GAFIPpd1pT5Vu0macCnK-2kjSGd2Q_at7shPriPS2wL8QtPQygv3Ckk2ZWehYpbcG-UJkh-InWqnETtpFMG4h8mpsrAPwNWPjgZYr/s640/blogger-image-434838037.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="332" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrrWuaSsMlNpKdJ0DZcEHnW7Pno1jGjsSUNzgFWG2GAFIPpd1pT5Vu0macCnK-2kjSGd2Q_at7shPriPS2wL8QtPQygv3Ckk2ZWehYpbcG-UJkh-InWqnETtpFMG4h8mpsrAPwNWPjgZYr/s400/blogger-image-434838037.jpg" width="400"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVSRoIIY1StoMUOu_vzTuEp26pkeu3qJOdCj8TZAE7sos-ACNW8JRg-hNGoCSyEaSFxdKxA94uY7kwmhrCXsz8183BjovkgXeUQzslFhZqVLjIzIT7lvMRIdSq-kFz_wOiipUhmOIB7jUy/s640/blogger-image-677230479.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="399" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVSRoIIY1StoMUOu_vzTuEp26pkeu3qJOdCj8TZAE7sos-ACNW8JRg-hNGoCSyEaSFxdKxA94uY7kwmhrCXsz8183BjovkgXeUQzslFhZqVLjIzIT7lvMRIdSq-kFz_wOiipUhmOIB7jUy/s400/blogger-image-677230479.jpg" width="400"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Having a large fabric stash forces me to sew in the future, which I may not want to do.I don't want a fully handmade wardrobe anyway, I actually want to spend a bit more on RTW and get better quality items. I don't want to pressure myself into feeling I have to make everything because I can. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I would like a stash of about 25 metres, including 4 or 5 metres of vintage fabric. I want to be at peace with the fact that some projects won't work, and you just have to bin them! I will also make what fits me now, I am not saving fabric for when I lose weight.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
My purchasing rules are basically, no patterns for the next year! I have more than enough, and some are so similar it's untrue! I am not going to count zips, buttons or threads ie items needed to finish a garment. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
My budget is going to be £30 per month on stash for all hobbies, at least until the end of the year when I want to review what I have made and spent. This includes fabric, pens, paint,wool etc, which feels quite tight, but hopefully achievable. I want to buy less fabric each month than I sew up. I have failed that in February, with the yorkshire spoolettes visit to Dewsbury, and some other purchases. So another rule is not to tempt myself too often! I haven't been to any vintage fairs yet this year, so that has probably saved me a bit. Who am I kidding.....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
SWAP 2016 is good for me, it's helping me to sew capsule wardrobes rather than just random items, and think about using my stash creatively. I probably won't finish by April, but will use it as a focus for this year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
It will be interesting to see if I keep to my plans! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>

<span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"> The first challenge is to take stock of your stash, document it, and think about why you bought that fabric. I have a spreadsheet for my fabric, and currently I have about 120 metres, plus a few UFOs and some fabric I have designated as muslin fabric...... Gulp! I find the spreadsheet doesn't convey the amount I have, it's just numbers. So I decided to photograph it in categories that make sense to me. Carrying it to be photographed, I realise the volume of fabric I have, it's heavy, and takes up a considerable amount of space. </span></div>

This is my jersey stash, isn't it lovely? But I reckon half of it I bought because of FOMO. Jersey is the fabric I am most likely to sew, it's quick, doesn't require that much fitting. </div>

Him indoors came when I was photographing, and said "is that all fabric?" I think he sees fabric as not in a useable state, as it's not items of clothing. There was the inevitable comment about how much I must have spent.</div>

The navy blue wool even had a hand written note on it, stating it was made at a Bradford mill, and at least 50 years old. The grey barkcloth with poppies on, was £20, and is at least 6 yards. Some day I will make some curtains from it!</div>

These are my fabrics to make special tops and blouses, two pieces of Liberty fabric in there. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So? It's all mostly lovely, but I don't want to have this much. There are lots of reasons I buy fabric, because buying is quicker and easier than making something, the hope I can turn the fabric into a beautiful item of clothing to wear, fear of missing out (FOMO) linked to seeing things on blogs. It also feels easier to justify buying fabric rather than clothes somehow. When I started sewing again in 2013 I was determined, to buy fabric just for my wardrobe needs. But I got pulled into the vintage, floral, indie patterns, what bloggers are sewing etc. </div>

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">But, this is where I am now, I can't get my money back. I do like all of the above fabric, and wish I had more time to sew it. </span></div>

I'll blog next time about my plans and thoughts for future stashing. </div>

<div>
<br></div>
<div>
I am not good at recycling, I find it a real chore to sort the rubbish out every week. However, when boy 1 gave me a pile of his old jeans with the comment 'I thought you could do something with these mum', I didn't have the heart to say, that I had over 100 metres of fabric already.... So the pile of jeans has sat there for about a year. </div>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
Boy 3 came home and and said that he had a textiles project that involves recycling. Boy 3 hates textiles with a passion, much to my sorrow. He needed to make a pillow case, so my bright idea was, you've guessed it, use the pile of jeans. But he only needed 2 pairs. I'm not sure if I will ever see this pillow case, as the felt pencil case inspired by Klimt, aka last years project was never finished despite my carefully chosen blue and orange felt!</div>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
It did inspire me to think about making boy number one's girlfriend, a cushion cover for her birthday. I have no idea if she will like it, but it's the thought that counts right? </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyaKHxdszdzpsfB-Ubr_1CieE_MOMOYAeTMxEYjBLBo4IwEiP2UcwuhyO2o_opSoPqonF8M-yuvkEwEtTMUFSZEwd5xGWL2zzaOvrAvQgyUKBGwRHF26iICo60Y80dMDEm0vGKjhix3QgZ/s640/blogger-image--1459404938.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyaKHxdszdzpsfB-Ubr_1CieE_MOMOYAeTMxEYjBLBo4IwEiP2UcwuhyO2o_opSoPqonF8M-yuvkEwEtTMUFSZEwd5xGWL2zzaOvrAvQgyUKBGwRHF26iICo60Y80dMDEm0vGKjhix3QgZ/s640/blogger-image--1459404938.jpg"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I cut out lots of rectangular pieces from the jeans, and randomly joined them together. Then my problems started. I had been so random, it was difficult to get a 16inch by 38inch rectangle , that I needed for my envelope style cushion cover. I thought the process would take a couple of hours.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu9zpvUNg1LFV5YDJ9qOO3TF7_bCoYE1b8wvbV4EuC5P4MYFv5ZW6D6-hl5DDPJ3lWCfVzKfyPW4dInYe0LWIAUVfBH7gU4RW8Kf2UrtlvF7oHzlGF6oUsl2VoxQb2vyqSJIFGSGFO3VRL/s640/blogger-image-215412111.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu9zpvUNg1LFV5YDJ9qOO3TF7_bCoYE1b8wvbV4EuC5P4MYFv5ZW6D6-hl5DDPJ3lWCfVzKfyPW4dInYe0LWIAUVfBH7gU4RW8Kf2UrtlvF7oHzlGF6oUsl2VoxQb2vyqSJIFGSGFO3VRL/s640/blogger-image-215412111.jpg"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
More like six! The girlfriend is definitely worth it, but I won't be doing another one! All the joined pieces have zigzagged edges. My cushion pad came from my Dewsbury Spoolettes haul, a 16 inch square. I think I could do with a bigger one, as my cushion cover ended up slightly too big. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Anyway here is the final product. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdjzgV2EZOfSdEPKTLIqGVlPUA1Nb1JGqBTOl7TVJbzldu64Hyv-aBh3VHvLwCD6qrxR2nWuCoRZ8GYX3orgBT5xHPSXuuggQCVrgPDx_2j7c7M32E2vJZXW81LMLzi2MX4U3-A64sVVYE/s640/blogger-image--1319173862.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdjzgV2EZOfSdEPKTLIqGVlPUA1Nb1JGqBTOl7TVJbzldu64Hyv-aBh3VHvLwCD6qrxR2nWuCoRZ8GYX3orgBT5xHPSXuuggQCVrgPDx_2j7c7M32E2vJZXW81LMLzi2MX4U3-A64sVVYE/s640/blogger-image--1319173862.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Ready to send.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5wDSjTZTXK6-_GDA8aFz7AhN96Ws6M-rHAuFK7rZ58-ldgJUaG1yAtX9D-6R8CJ-I8Bm5LDqRaeh7TtThosLnelvfrrXeHzJvh1OSxFUMH_VWdTv-38OPHwytRJ4V8NxL-1m10o8eKqz5/s640/blogger-image--409679637.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5wDSjTZTXK6-_GDA8aFz7AhN96Ws6M-rHAuFK7rZ58-ldgJUaG1yAtX9D-6R8CJ-I8Bm5LDqRaeh7TtThosLnelvfrrXeHzJvh1OSxFUMH_VWdTv-38OPHwytRJ4V8NxL-1m10o8eKqz5/s640/blogger-image--409679637.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br></div>

<br />
Its been really motivating, to seeing garments being made from the Yorkshire Spoolettes fabric shopping haul, I think that <a href="https://thimberlina.wordpress.com/2016/02/17/the-brooklyn-hoodie-by-sbcc/">Ali</a> was off the starting blocks first, with her wonderful Brooklyn Hoodie.<br />
<br />
I have got a few days off for half term, and unusually have got some time to sew! I know I said I would start with the <a href="http://www.mariadenmark.com/shop/406-karen-drape-dress/">Karen </a> drape dress, but I already had the <a href="http://shop.sewoverit.co.uk/collections/dressmaking-patterns/products/cowl-neck-dress-pdf-sewing-pattern">Sew over it cowl neck dress and top pattern</a>. Also I wasn't sure what the draping effect would do to the flowers in my dress fabric. I think I will eventually try the Karen dress with a solid colour.<br />
<br />
I had bought the abstract faces fabric as a bit of a joke really, something I could wear to my arty classes and not worry about getting splodges of paint on. I thought I would use it as a muslin before making a dress. It was my first attempt sewing with scuba. I didn't stabilise the shoulders. It wasn't that clear on the patten where the shoulders ended and the neck began, but I guessed and it seems to be fine. I joined the shoulder seams, then inserted the sleeves in flat, before joining the sleeve and side seams as one. I don't have an overlocker, so every thing is sewn with a zigzag stitch, and my seams are left unfinished.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I love it! and will definitely wear it for more than just painting! I wore it today out to lunch with him indoors. I think he needs more training in taking photos for blog purposes. I have chopped my head off, because I look really cross eyed, and he only took one photo, of the whole top. Also I haven't got sway back issues, the top needed pulling down and arranging for the back view. I wasn't sure about the cowl neck, in scuba but I like it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So changes I have made for my dress are to take a centimetre off the front armscye. I also basted the sleeve head before attaching, and stabilised the shoulders with clear elastic. Although the fabric is navy and yellow, the back of the fabric is white, so it is a printed ponte. The navy isn't as dark after the pre wash, so I don't think this will be a long lasting garment. I love the bright yellow flowers though,and its like wearing pyjamas, it's so comfortable. </div>

I am happy with my decision to use the Cowl necked pattern rather than the drape dress, as the drape would distort the flowers. So I have managed to sew 2 things for <a href="https://thimberlina.wordpress.com/2016/02/13/dont-forget-to-enter-the-comp/">Ali's</a> challenge for at least one of the fabric purchases to be turned into a garment by March the 6th!</div>

<br />
My idea now is to make whatever I fancy until mid March, then I will work on making sure I have got garments that fit the remit.<br />
<br />
After Christmas I made 2 Lottie blouses using the Simple Sew Patten that was free with a magazine<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The instructions weren't great, and the pattern was lacking essential things like marking where to sew the tie to, but if you kept the final result in your head, you could work it out! Amanda of Sewing Bee fame has made a collection of Lotties <a href="http://aebgledhill.com/the-lottie-collection/">here</a>. I don't think I will make quite as many, but I really like the pattern, its comfortable, stylish and has no buttons or zips.<br />
<br />
I also made a simple navy jersey skirt, one single seam, with no waistband, just a wide piece of elastic sewn to the top of the skirt and folded over, like this<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzdBku9b80EjM34MFNma9qejAtYDKgMePRLncLPruPmZsIOVW97K1QHqgQmvF5cpcPhynL7IwG8GxCyuHsmOhSohh2W3F73LDXmZwsM4IIGodWrzyw7_Lj7Afe3JFDDKHcqEeeNfj4eDd5/s1600/IMG_1613.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzdBku9b80EjM34MFNma9qejAtYDKgMePRLncLPruPmZsIOVW97K1QHqgQmvF5cpcPhynL7IwG8GxCyuHsmOhSohh2W3F73LDXmZwsM4IIGodWrzyw7_Lj7Afe3JFDDKHcqEeeNfj4eDd5/s320/IMG_1613.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

I have already worn the skirt and the Lottie blouses loads, really great for work. So I think that SWAP2016 has already been a success for me. </div>

I am probably going to include my coral Scout top, as my previously made item. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With the lime Coco I made in January, and a pair of jeans as my ready to wear item, I have got four tops and two bottoms. I am planning at least one dress. It's layers I'm lacking. I attempted a Merchant and Mills Heron jacket, but couldn't get the pivoting for the collar to work, so that got dumped! I'm knitting a summer cardigan, although the colour is ok it doesn't really go with these tops, its meant to go over skimpy tee shirts. I need to have a think! </div>

<span id="goog_1069978908"></span><span id="goog_1069978909"></span>I wear these three all the time. They go with jeans, and the plain ones are good for work, when you can't be bothered to think about what to wear. Ive had failures as well, the main thing to remember for me is don't make ones with the collar from soft jersey, use something equivalent to ponte roma. I prefer bracelet length sleeves, but the cuffs look good as well. Have you made a Coco? is it a wardrobe staple for you? </div>

<br />
Someone mentioned <a href="http://www.handmadejane.co.uk/">handmadejane</a> to me, and I was off down the rabbit hole of blogs, independent patterns, online shopping etc etc. One thing that looked fun was the sewing meet ups in Birmingham and London, but I couldn't justify travelling all that way to buy fabric when we have good shops and a wealth of textile history in Yorkshire! So it was great to find <a href="https://thimberlina.wordpress.com/">Ali's</a> blog and discover the existence of the Yorkshire Spoolettes and plans to meet up on the 6th February.<br />
<br />
Ali has done a blog post <a href="https://thimberlina.wordpress.com/2016/02/06/the-spoolettes-2nd-meet-up/">here</a> I didn't take any photos on the day, too busy talking and buying fabric! so the photos with people in are are Ali's. We started off at a trimmings and haberdashery stall, where I bought satin bias binding at 20p a metre and lovely pink lace at a pound a metre! (the cushion pad came from Fabworks)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7NwPPzfdao8PXBUACzsaUHaXHgkIjyYA5HPFwzaTuELWiATTNfLAG_Ejshi0bAAqkU6BSlL1UzqjgWUfU_Z_SjTeu14_qURHa8UfiAGvnxKZX8PwmE4M7g-_z6Lgu73HX4yUrnKZ__jsz/s1600/IMG_1598.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="397" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7NwPPzfdao8PXBUACzsaUHaXHgkIjyYA5HPFwzaTuELWiATTNfLAG_Ejshi0bAAqkU6BSlL1UzqjgWUfU_Z_SjTeu14_qURHa8UfiAGvnxKZX8PwmE4M7g-_z6Lgu73HX4yUrnKZ__jsz/s400/IMG_1598.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
We spent a long time in Fabworks (online shop <a href="http://www.fabworks.co.uk/">here</a>), and a couple of ladies were wearing items with fabric previously bought there! I had already looked online and picked a couple of fabrics, but got persuaded into these four pieces.<br />

We all had a late lunch at Weatherspoons much to the bemusement of the mainly male clientele watching the rugby! It was great to chat to continue chatting about sewing and fabric, and meet people whose blogs I read. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So a great day out, with lovely ladies. I also 'swapped' 7 patterns and 4 lots of fabric, which definitely justifies my purchases. I notice that <a href="http://makingandmarking.com/">Camilla</a> has taken a retro pattern I brought, hope she makes it up soon! Ali has set us a challenge, to make something with at least one of our purchases, by the 6th of March - better get sewing!</div>

<br />
Well so much for no more stash! I discovered the joys of <a href="http://www.fabworks.co.uk/">Fabworks</a> online, which led to this, beautiful navy polka dot viscose Jersey and some cotton Breton stripe Jersey, 5 metres in total.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I bought Love Sewing magazine this month(issue 23), mainly for the teeshirt pattern from <a href="http://www.fehrtrade.com/tag/fehr-trade-patterns/">Fehr Trade </a>. Then on the last day of January, I saw the Prima pattern featured on <a href="http://sew-incidentally.blogspot.co.uk/">sew-incidentally's blog</a> a simple jacket pattern, that I think I will use, so ordered that too!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But...... In January I finished 2 Lottie blouses, made 2 Cocos and one knit skirt, all part of my plans for #swap2016, so will blog about those soon. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I don't think that was too bad! February should be a no stash month, but I'm going to a Yorkshire Spoolettes meet up..............</div>

I have started another hobby. I used to knit, particularly when I was at university, I remember knitting on the long train journeys home, between Bradford and Exeter. I joined Ravelry a couple of years ago, just out of curiosity, I didn't do anything with it.<br />
<br />
So one very wet Sunday in December, I went to Baa Ram Ewe in Leeds and bought Titus Wool in 'Endeavour', a lovely shade of navy. I bought pattern markers which I had never used before. I found winding my own balls of wool from the skeins a pain, I got into a massive tangle with the first one, and spent ages de tangling. It's put me off buying skeins TBH. The pattern was easy though, and I liked the scarf cum shawl effect. I was worried because I associate shawls as an old lady item <a href="http://www.wikiart.org/en/james-ensor/old-lady-with-blue-shawl-the-artist-s-grandmother-1881">like this</a><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Hopefully it's not too bad on me, really cosy and warm. There is a free pattern on Ravelry here <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/garter-ruffles-scarf">garter ruffles scarf</a> for double knitting, I bought my pattern, which is 4 ply, as that's what the Titus wool is. I suspect the 2 patterns are the same, I felt I was using the wrong weight wool for the needles, but the 4 ply does give a nice lacey effect.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-EVt7Un1ba0w275mW3zLsfiUOSguSfFMPO9IV0D3_pRobpJHe_sh-qWVJsJ1xEVLrPAemepy0vw0BEuqsjhtTksX940f3YrBDJCSGX3nmqK8605rWWFNNWT0rH2GQudCEuKcpZa10KLGE/s640/blogger-image-995751957.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-EVt7Un1ba0w275mW3zLsfiUOSguSfFMPO9IV0D3_pRobpJHe_sh-qWVJsJ1xEVLrPAemepy0vw0BEuqsjhtTksX940f3YrBDJCSGX3nmqK8605rWWFNNWT0rH2GQudCEuKcpZa10KLGE/s320/blogger-image-995751957.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The navy goes well with my first intentions for #swap2016, which are focused on navy and lime. Mind you I'm going a bit off piste with my swap plans, I'm going to rename mine the simple swap, and just be random. I'm a fan of http://ruthieksews1.blogspot.co.uk, I'm going to follow her example and just make what I want until about mid March, then, I will try to form an 11 garment wardrobe, using the swap rules I've mentioned before. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Returning to knitting, I've obviously already built up a stash, and have got a ufo put to one side.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7BejUaaAHAvVuW-meHpYozbGtnui_ibd6z3zXbIWKc_BkUV2gnjZtzDM0R5xAucuoFAMia1Ozs1jpCUL-AFBytQg-LFFIRFaun7xtx6Ye-IkoW7TzGz8AE8y-jiyY6q4LgLGuc5U5ZfTJ/s640/blogger-image--1639242443.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="319" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7BejUaaAHAvVuW-meHpYozbGtnui_ibd6z3zXbIWKc_BkUV2gnjZtzDM0R5xAucuoFAMia1Ozs1jpCUL-AFBytQg-LFFIRFaun7xtx6Ye-IkoW7TzGz8AE8y-jiyY6q4LgLGuc5U5ZfTJ/s320/blogger-image--1639242443.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I'm not sure about the colour of this, and knitting it from the top down is freaking me out a bit. I'm used to knitting flat pieces from the bottom up. I'm not sure about all this Americanisation of knitting, different needle sizes and terminology. Anyway, I've never had pretty scarves, hats and gloves for winter, so that's what I am mainly going to aim for. However, I do have enough wool for three cardigans, including the apple green Malabrigo above which might get 'frogged', see I'm down with the kids, using this knitting lingo! </div>

You know what happens next...... Yes the thought ' I could do that too.... If I start in January , I might get a few done by next December'. I searched the net for suppliers of the Drops kidsilk wool that sewchet used. I found <a href="http://www.knittedhome.com/">http://www.knittedhome.com</a>, who sent me a free book of patterns with my order, which included a hat pattern for the kidsilk wool.<br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div>
The hat is just garter stitch, and would complement my lacy scarf </div>
<div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I have been knitting both at the same time, as I don't have to concentrate on the hat, which is knitted using 2 threads at a time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Although I followed the instructions and measured the final length, my hat is not quite so Scandinavian, more gnome like. Apologies for the colour, it should be like the scarf.</div>

It's a bit of a fragile Pompom as the wool snapped when I tied it together, I had to re do it, with a doubled length. I suspect the threads will gradually fall out. But I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts. Next time I might use these <a href="http://www.homemade-gifts-made-easy.com/how-to-make-pom-poms.html">instructions </a>which look easier and more robust. I need to finish the scarf now, so I can have a matchy matchy set! Then I am going to make a less gnome like hat with some sea green kid silk wool. </div>

Finally finished and worn on a bitterly cold day, by me. No photo though, so here is my sofa modelling the hat and scarf.<br />

I was getting fed up with being disappointed in with the number of wadders I was producing. I've been reflecting on why this is happening this week, and realised:<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. I don't want to give up sewing because I'm often disappointed with RTW clothes, and I enjoy the smug feeling I get wearing clothes I have made myself. </div>
<div>
2. Stop rushing, it's better to make a few nice things , than loads of mediocre stuff. Yes I want to use my stash, but it really doesn't matter if I don't. Enjoy the process as well as the result.<br />
3. There is something really pleasurable and therapeutic about sewing, whether its long straight seams or tricky curves.</div>
<div>
4. Think more about the fabric and the pattern. One of my positive discoveries has been sewing 2 Lottie blouses in viscose, they drape beautifully. In contrast, I made another Coco, and the jersey is too soft to sustain the collar, which just flops lethargically, along with my hair! so Cocos with collars should only be made with ponte roma in future!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmqn2fEZOVtnwcYDkL9JHQgqF4RU2HZOgkclA0650t6yjGp-go0VDZcL2v4GSpq7U1uMvQuL3YHusJssG3qj6PFtSnCD8P0Eez8zO57eYB-zfV2-9b8PLdEx4g-8LjQYt0GegsADe4Ue5g/s640/blogger-image-2029592485.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmqn2fEZOVtnwcYDkL9JHQgqF4RU2HZOgkclA0650t6yjGp-go0VDZcL2v4GSpq7U1uMvQuL3YHusJssG3qj6PFtSnCD8P0Eez8zO57eYB-zfV2-9b8PLdEx4g-8LjQYt0GegsADe4Ue5g/s640/blogger-image-2029592485.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Another failure was the top I wanted to be part of my #SWAP2016</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilY3_rph-UjBvrX2a32rAxpZ6xJXXkAJNabZ1q6ClsA_RTS0tNjbKbRxiq2lTjJO3f9jyhj5gNurJ0FUFbod_pmtwSIQQaYQofBsA0l8fxXhrTbNhqfb6Ctj6dR55Hpb83J1QUWf57MhtO/s640/blogger-image--1676366846.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilY3_rph-UjBvrX2a32rAxpZ6xJXXkAJNabZ1q6ClsA_RTS0tNjbKbRxiq2lTjJO3f9jyhj5gNurJ0FUFbod_pmtwSIQQaYQofBsA0l8fxXhrTbNhqfb6Ctj6dR55Hpb83J1QUWf57MhtO/s640/blogger-image--1676366846.jpg" /></a></div>
The fabric is too crisp for the pattern, and I don't like the shape of the armholes. I should have looked more closely at the picture on the pattern, Simplicity 1202, because even on the model, the armhole looks unattractive, and standing with hands on hips means there is too much armpit on display!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIhA4MlWoiUzsL9iBSor9qGzlKDTqrzXqv-9oj2xcwmJp683jb446mdokkjiRUqNAS93JT1mHVPkUWyoi87pdjZRumqu9c0OaMxd-lVfrfe2Rk34zGGKwFpY3NkSuLL6q0EVVQXWp35SY6/s1600/IMG_1550.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIhA4MlWoiUzsL9iBSor9qGzlKDTqrzXqv-9oj2xcwmJp683jb446mdokkjiRUqNAS93JT1mHVPkUWyoi87pdjZRumqu9c0OaMxd-lVfrfe2Rk34zGGKwFpY3NkSuLL6q0EVVQXWp35SY6/s320/IMG_1550.jpg" width="246" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
It feels like I am only making one successful item for every two failures. The interesting thing is, this happened in January a couple of years ago too. I rush because I think I don't have much time, and then feel disappointed, especially when I compare my sewing to the blogs I read. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I have been listening to Elizabeth Gilbert's new book, <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Big-Magic-Creative-Living-Beyond/dp/1408866730/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1454622836&sr=8-1&keywords=big+magic">Big Magic </a> which I would really recommend if you are a creative person. What I got out of it, is just to keep creating, and move on after failures, to improve you have to keep practicing! I think the book applies to all aspects of creativity - sewing included.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Anyway, my creativity is for me, I am not making my living from it. Also I have a very busy life, and sewing isn't my only hobby, which means it's the time in my life to sew simple clothes. At some point I will have more time, to learn couture techniques, and make more complicated things. I want to document success and failures this year, so I can see what I've achieved when I get to the end of 2016. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>

Inspired by the Facebook Dylusions challenge to use pink and lime, and Dylusions products. I am working in three journals at a time, so space to experiment. These are the results. I used an old dress making pattern, that was missing 2 pieces so wasn't useable as a pattern, as well as stencils and stamps from my stash.<div>My word for the year is Choose. <div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFnRTQDvGsLGYHWQ5KAHX3tDVTaSM4M7lncUGz86eqlNyhkkIrBl197gu67A5gjHyIDRPXtS2yk5gx9cZzzIBrzqdb7keLsGPqPKI9fwT_kK_UH7Sn-9AtYAyNjfeE7s83q-s6dqIXG89a/s640/blogger-image--2138384720.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFnRTQDvGsLGYHWQ5KAHX3tDVTaSM4M7lncUGz86eqlNyhkkIrBl197gu67A5gjHyIDRPXtS2yk5gx9cZzzIBrzqdb7keLsGPqPKI9fwT_kK_UH7Sn-9AtYAyNjfeE7s83q-s6dqIXG89a/s640/blogger-image--2138384720.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6NiD-ME9UO3XjmJm4Ks9yhoXI1Lc2J-Z0epvYx4pz5f03-0SRXsVIOS_Hqd5ZBfNmF4ol_TmuTREDCkxTVNjnpE-G-VnbCB5M_SAPRiVuw4YyIWx90PK2d_UDpIpZILK9ZePmvJ-GjqgJ/s640/blogger-image-527306719.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6NiD-ME9UO3XjmJm4Ks9yhoXI1Lc2J-Z0epvYx4pz5f03-0SRXsVIOS_Hqd5ZBfNmF4ol_TmuTREDCkxTVNjnpE-G-VnbCB5M_SAPRiVuw4YyIWx90PK2d_UDpIpZILK9ZePmvJ-GjqgJ/s640/blogger-image-527306719.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-LXgYyL-tQ6xpHA6PYrLZP8_HTEfhFYHXVIkbcmKzldyDJaN-xwdUW9FnOim9XNZxiXAOZ0qQ8hNAG18KWJROqae-vhJ0FDu3RnzbpG7g8xxtlR1MS9QdUgovjIMdeMtBC0IDuMMMLG15/s640/blogger-image--1728639426.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-LXgYyL-tQ6xpHA6PYrLZP8_HTEfhFYHXVIkbcmKzldyDJaN-xwdUW9FnOim9XNZxiXAOZ0qQ8hNAG18KWJROqae-vhJ0FDu3RnzbpG7g8xxtlR1MS9QdUgovjIMdeMtBC0IDuMMMLG15/s640/blogger-image--1728639426.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>My favourite is the top one is created in my small fauxdori art journal.
